Ed Abbott Biography

Advanced Technologies Engineer
Audio Technologies Research, Development and Implementation
Universal Mastering Studios, Los Angeles

A seven-year veteran at MCA/Universal, now Vivendi/Universal, Ed has been developing DVD-A authoring within Universal since the format was first proposed. He has provided technical development support for 4C and SDMI, both Matsushita and Sonic Solutions authoring packages, as well as DVD-A manufacturing and consumer DVD-A player manufacturers. He has helped author many DVD-A titles (as yet unreleased, unfortunately), primarily concentrating on high-resolution audio mastering, audio asset prep and quality control, and supporting graphics designers as necessary in menu development.

Also while at Universal he's been intimately involved with the technical and audible implications of on-line music codecs, music "watermarking", CD and DVD-A manufacturing and future alternative delivery formats.

Ed started out recording classical, period acoustical and jazz concerts live to stereo for National Public Radio while working as a tech at Sony. This led to a full-time gig at Soundmirror in Boston where he gained ear training, experience and exposure to "audiophile"-style recording techniques and early digital recording equipment. After Soundmirror he returned to tech work for JVC, who soon re-located him to the Los Angeles area.

Over the years Ed has free-lanced projects in a variety of related disciplines: composition and recording studio design and installation, speaker design, recording and mixing sessions some audio mastering and restoration and occasional vintage keyboard repair.
