Andrew Marshall Biography

Andrew Marshall is publisher and editor of Audio Ideas Guide, which celebrates its 20th year of continuous publication this year under his leadership. An Honours Graduate of Queen's University, Andrew has had several careers, often parallel ones, since graduation in 1966. By the age of 25 he had taught high school English, won a London & District high school basketball championship as coach, and become Station Manager of CFRC and CFRC-FM radio at Queen's. He has been writing about audio and other technologies since 1972, and his Audio Ideas radio program ran from 1973 to 1986 on Toronto's CKFM radio, over 3000 programs in all.

He also worked extensively for CBC Radio from 1974 to 1978, hosting and co-producing classical music and other arts programs, during the course of which he interviewed many musicians and composers, as well as numerous other artistic personalities. These include pianist Glenn Gould, conductor Neville Marriner, painter Alex Colville, poet Al Purdy, composer Aaron Copland, and guitarist Liona Boyd, just to name a few. One of his radio series, From The Masters, explored the art and science of recording, while another, In The Middle Of The Music, presented SQ and QS matrix surround recordings, including many BBC transcriptions not otherwise available to music lovers.

Andrew has also been making his own recordings since his days as a student broadcaster, and Audio Ideas Recordings is a vital part of his creative and business life. One AI title (engineered by Clive Allen), the complete Debussy Preludes played by Francine Kay, piano, was nominated for a Juno award in 1996, and the two jazz CDs Andrew engineered and produced with former Bill Evans Trio bassist Chuck Israels and his quartet have been lauded for their exceptional sound quality, and have sold thousands of copies all over the world.

Andrew Marshall lives in King City, Ontario with his wife, writer Heather Robertson. Their son, Aaron, also an important contributing editor to Audio Ideas Guide, and an assistant film editor professionally (a Queen's Film Studies graduate, he was winner of a Canadian Academy of Film & Television Apprenticeship), now lives in Manhattan Beach, California. Aaron's think piece in the newest AIG, "Is MP3 The Death Knell Of High End Audio?" is a useful overview of current changes in digital formats, and a free copy of the new issue containing it is available to seminar participants.
