The Audio Engineering Society community mourns the loss of a true giant in our field, Taras “Terry” Medwedyk, who passed away on January 24, 2026. While many knew Terry as the brilliant mind behind Group One Acoustics Inc., we also knew him as a mentor, a friend, and a man whose generosity was as profound as his technical expertise.

Since establishing Group One in 1983, Terry shaped the sound of our industry quite literally. From the legendary spaces at CBC, Bell Media, and Metalworks, to the mastering suites at Lacquer Channel—which have stood the test of time since 1989—Terry’s architectural acoustic designs set the gold standard. His work wasn’t just about the math or the measurements; it was about creating spaces where art could thrive.

But Terry’s legacy is defined by more than just the rooms he built; it is defined by the people he helped. He was the embodiment of the AES spirit—always willing to share his wisdom.

We remember a man who, when asked for advice on a small basement studio, might jokingly say “don’t do it,” only to follow up the next day with 20 pages of handwritten drawings and notes, asking for nothing in return. We remember the backyard BBQs where he would solve the world’s acoustical problems over long conversations. We remember a professional who treated colleagues like friends and competitors with deep respect.

Whether he was designing a massive facility for Corus Entertainment or helping a musician perfect a home setup, Terry gave his all. He fixed our rooms, he educated us, and he made our world sound better.

Thank you, Terry, for your wisdom, your energy, and your kindness. You will be dearly missed, but in the silence of the perfect rooms you left behind, your legacy will always speak volumes.
